- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 1/4 tsp active yeast (1 package)
- 1 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
Cinnamon Roll Filling
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting
- 4 oz cream cheese
- 4 oz butter
- 2 tbsp cocoa
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1 tbsp milk
Cinnamon Roll Dough
Warm buttermilk in a microwave safe bowl. Add yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar, which can be taken from the 1/4 cup, to your buttermilk and wait to see bubbles. If you see bubbles, your yeast is active and ready to use. If you don't see bubbles, you'll need to throw the mixture away and start again with fresh yeast. Once your milk and yeast begin to form bubbles, add the mixture to a large mixing bowl and whisk.
Add vegetable oil and sugar, and whisk until combined.
Whisk in eggs until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
Slowly stir in dry ingredients until a dough begins to form. When the dough begins to form, remove the spoon and knead the dough with your hands until it forms into a nice ball. Dough should be slightly sticky. Cover the dough in the bowl with a dish rag and let sit while you make the filling.
Assembling Cinnamon Rolls
After the dough has doubled in size in your mixing bowl, roll out dough on a floured surface into a large rectangle.
Spread the cinnamon filling over the dough. Tighltly roll up the dough starting from the long side.
Cut dough into 12 rolls and place each roll into a greased 9x9 baking dish. Cover the rolls again with a dish towel and let sit on the counter to rise for about 30-60 minutes.
After the rolls have risen, bake for 22-25 minutes at 350F.
Chocolate Cream Cheese Icing
Place softened butter and cream cheese into a mixer. Mix on medium speed until smooth and creamy.
Add cocoa, powdered sugar, and vanilla to butter and cream cheese, and mix until all ingredients are combined and frosting is smooth and creamy. Add 1-2 tablespoons of milk to get to spreadable consistency. Frost cinnamon rolls with frosting when rolls are completely cool. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
