Unicorn cakes have been a very popular cake trend for a while now and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. You can make your own unicorn cake at home using this easy tutorial that will show you how!
I’ve been wanting to do a unicorn cake tutorial for a while now, but haven’t. I felt like there are so many other tutorials out there why do you need another one?? But now that we’re all stuck at home, restaurants and bakeries are closed, and birthday parties are being canceled, I wanted to put this tutorial together to show you how you can make your own unicorn cake at home. There are a few steps to making this cake, but if you take them one at a time, you can do it!
You will need a few different colors of fondant to make the unicorn horn, ears and eyes and you can make your own fondant at home as well! I have a whole post on making homemade fondant with a recipe and video tutorial so be sure to check that out here.
You’ll also want a few different icing colors for making the unicorn’s hair. For my easy and delicious American buttercream recipe that’s great for cake decorating, check out this post.
How to make a unicorn cake.
Step 1
Bake and frost your cake.
You’ll need to start by baking your favorite cake recipe and frosting it with your favorite icing. I used my favorite vanilla American buttercream recipe. It’s delicious and easy to make. Get the recipe here! Then figure out what colors you’ll want your unicorn’s hair to be and color your icing. I like picking at least 3 different colors.
Step 2
Make the unicorn horn.
You’ll need a small amount of gold fondant and a long cookie pop stick. Start by rolling your fondant out in a long log about 1/2 the length of your cake pop stick. Next, starting at the top of your stick, wrap your fondant around the stick in a spiral making it look like a unicorn horn. Set it aside to dry.
Step 3
Make the ears.
For the ears you’ll need a heart cookie cutter, white fondant, and gold or pink fondant. Cut out a heart in white fondant and a heart in gold/pink fondant for each ear. After you’ve cut out your 4 hearts, turn them so the points are at the top. Cut the bottom of the gold or pink heart off so it will fit on top of the white heart. You want the white to show around the pink or gold. Using edible glue (make that at home too with this recipe) or water, glue the gold/pink fondant on top of the white fondant. After you’ve glued the fondant, take a toothpick and insert it into the middle of the fondant ear. Wrap the bottom of the ears around the toothpick. This is what will hold up the ears.
Your ears should look like this when you’re done. Let the ears dry. An egg carton makes a great place for drying unicorn ears.
Step 4
Make the eyes.
Cut out small circles in black fondant. Using the same circle cutter, cut the bottoms of the circles off leaving a nice curved sliver for the unicorn’s eyes. Curve the outside ends up on both pieces to make eyelashes. Using another small piece of fondant, repeat the steps with a very small circle cookie cutter or a piping tip. Use this piece as the second eyelash. You’ll need to use edible glue or water again to glue this small piece to the larger piece of fondant.
Step 5
Piping the hair and putting it all together.
When your unicorn horn is dry, place it in the center of your cake. With a 1M piping tip, begin piping rosettes to create the unicorn’s hair. I like to start in the center of my cake so I can easily line up the horn, ears and eyes. Then just start piping different color rosettes wherever you want your unicorn’s hair to be. After piping the hair, add the ears.
Using your edible glue or water, add the eyes.
And you should now have a beautiful unicorn cake! I hope this tutorial helped you make your own unicorn cake at home! If you still have questions be sure to leave them in the comments.
