How to make a popcorn cake.
The first thing you’ll want to do is bake and assemble your layer cake. I used 2, 8 inch round cake pans (be sure to use homemade cake pan release before baking) and frosted them with my easy and delicious vanilla buttercream.
You’ll need red and white fondant for the decorations on this cake. If you want to make your own fondant, follow this easy recipe and tutorial. To color your own homemade fondant check out this tutorial.
Next, you need to measure the height of your cake and cut out strips the same height and about 1 inch wide. Next using edible glue, glue your fondant strips to your cake about 2 inches apart. If you want to put a name on the front, cut out a fancy shape in white fondant and attach it to the front of your cake. You can use an edible marker or royal icing with a #1 piping tip to write the name.
Lastly, you’ll add your popcorn to the top. I added a fresh thin layer of buttercream to the top of the cake before adding the popcorn to make sure it would stick. I took a few pieces at a time and gently but firmly pressed the popcorn into the buttercream on top of the cake. I did this until the whole top of the cake was covered.
After I attached all of my popcorn on top, I piped a ring of buttercream around the top of the cake to make it look more like a bowl and I piped red dots around the bottom of the cake to add more detail.
And that’s how to make a popcorn cake! Let me know if you have any other questions!
